The wine cooler was invented in California in the early 1970s. A lightly carbonated blend of white wine and citrus fruit juices, wine cooler beverages became the fastest-growing segment of the wine industry in the United States in the mid-1980s. Then in the 1990s, Coors Brewing Company built on the wine cooler innovation, and developed Zima, a lightly-carbonated un-hopped beer with citrus, tangerine and pineapple flavors. The original lemon-lime drink was part of the "clear craze" of the 1990s, and Zima created a new category, an alcoholic beverage that wasn't beer, wasn’t wine, and wasn’t hard alcohol.

In the late 1990s Smirnoff further innovated the “alcopops” category (also known as FAB – Flavored Alcoholic Beverage, or PPS – Pre Packages Spirit), by introduced a series of new products which quickly became popular among young people, especially within the club scene. In recent years, Smirnoff has launched Smirnoff Ice Twisted, a spin-off of the American Smirnoff Ice that featured flavors such as Mandarin Orange, Green Apple, Watermelon, Wild Grape, Pomegranate Fusion, Arctic Berry (Blueberry), Green Apple Bite and Raspberry Burst. In the fruit based alcopops category, the only other alternative is Bacardi Breezer, a rum-based alcoholic beverage with 4% alcohol. This rum based “cooler” comes in a variety of fruit flavors: lemon, pineapple, apple, grapefruit, lime, orange, watermelon, cranberry, coconut, orange, and lemon.
